State schools chief assails veto of funding for data-collection system

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of $6.8 million for a statewide data system to track student information has California Department of Education officials fighting back. Last Friday, the governor vetoed six months of funding for CalPADS, beginning Dec. 6. The governor also vetoed $3.5 million for CalTIDES, a planned data system to track teacher information. The governor has criticized delays in completing the $34 million California Pupil Achievement Data System, threatening in May to pull the plug on the state Department of Education program and contract it out to other agencies. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell fired back at the governor in a news release, calling the veto "shortsighted, ill-informed and hypocritical." (more…)
