White House holds summit on cash-strapped community colleges

Community colleges across the United States have seen enrollment figures jump by 24 percent over the past few years, as unemployed workers look to retrain at those institutions, which offer lower tuition compared to their four-year counterparts. But the recession has forced some of those colleges to cut back on course offerings and put limits on enrollment. Those issues will be at the core of a White House summit Tuesday hosted by Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden and a community college professor herself. Participants will discuss the impact of community colleges in developing America's workforce and explore ways to reach President Barack Obama's goal of an additional 5 million community college degrees and certificates by the year 2020.
