Californians join hands in support of community colleges

Hundreds of people joined hands at the Capitol and across California on Sunday in support of a scholarship fund for community colleges – as a chancellor warned of severe consequences for students due to the budget crisis. In Sacramento and on campuses from the College of the Redwoods to San Diego City College, faculty, students and graduates hosted festivals to raise money for a scholarship endowment fund. But the benefit for the California Community College Scholarship Endowment came as state community colleges Chancellor Jack Scott warned that budget woes could deny admission to 400,000 students next year. With 2.7 million students and 112 colleges, California has the nation's largest community college system. But Scott said 140,000 students were denied admission last year because of an 8 percent budget cut. He said more stand to be turned away with deep cuts looming this year. (more...)
