Education inequities hurting Latinos in city schools

Over the past weeks, America’s Finest City was confronted with the unthinkable: the possible insolvency of San Diego city schools. Vested interests will debate the cause for this budget crisis – which was merely kicked down the road a bit by Sacramento’s budget maneuvering last week – and the options to address it. What needs to be considered foremost in this debate is the impact of the crisis upon the most vulnerable: our children. For Latino educators, our fear is the options adopted by the school board will further exacerbate inequities within our public school system. Our fears are validated by the recent discussions on the redistribution of Title I funds to schools most in need. (more...)
