Imperial Beach schools will see fewer teachers, larger classes

Elementary schools in Imperial Beach will have fewer teachers and bigger classes next year. The moves are aimed at reducing at least $1.5 million from the South Bay Union School District’s $7.5 million projected deficit in its $56 million operating budget. The remaining shortfall would be eliminated with $2.5 million in one-time state and federal funds and $3.5 million from the district’s reserve, which totals $9.4 million, or 14 percent, of this year’s budget. About $18 million has been cut and $6 million in reserve funds have been spent in the last decade, according to district officials. (more...)
