Presidential Teacher Corps: Building a 21st century teaching force

In his State of the Union address, President Obama made a passionate plea for young people across the country to consider a career in teaching because it would offer them a unique opportunity to "make a difference in the life of our nation." I couldn't agree more. My time at the Denver Public Schools taught me there is no harder, or more important, job than being a teacher. With more than 1 million teachers expected to retire over the next few years, there has never been a more critical time to bring a new army of talented teachers into the profession. But the reality is our approach to hiring and retaining people to teach in America's classrooms is fundamentally ill-equipped to meet the demands of the 21st century. Currently, nearly 50 percent of teachers who enter the profession leave in the first five years. (more...)
