Teacher union backs breaking up Milwaukee district

Wisconsin's largest teachers union called on Tuesday for the Milwaukee school district to be broken up into smaller districts as part of an aggressive reform agenda that also includes tying teacher pay to performance and instituting a statewide evaluation system that would force poor performers from their jobs. The proposals from the Wisconsin Education Association Council mark a break from its past positions and a move toward policies long pushed for by conservatives, although the merit pay idea has been embraced both by President Barack Obama and Republican Gov. Scott Walker. Walker, who took office last month, is expected to release his own education reform proposal soon for the Legislature to consider. (more...)
