Officials: Lockdowns more common, but schools safe

How prepared are Orange County schools to deal with the threat of violence on campus? That's a questions some have been asking after two shootings and a third lockdown on campuses in Los Angeles County last week. Overall, local school officials and police agree that despite the disturbing images from campuses nearby, Orange County's 600 public schools with more than 500,000 students are exceptionally safe. And while school districts are reviewing security procedures and redoubling existing measures, they say the recent spike in school violence is no reason to panic. Orange County's serious student misconduct rate of 32 incidents per 100,000 students is almost three times lower than the statewide average, according to state figures. (more…)
