Proposed school closings stir anger

Dozens of angry parents filled the seats at the Long Beach Unified School District board meeting on Tuesday night to protest the district's proposed closure of two local elementary schools. They held up signs that read, "Please Save Our School" and voiced their concerns over what they said was a shocking and unfair plan to close Buffum Elementary, 2350 Ximeno Ave. in Long Beach, and Burroughs Elementary, 1260 E. 33rd St. in Signal Hill, by next fall. Parents were notified in letters sent home on Friday. "I understand the district is having budget issues, but I don't understand why they have to close our school," said Constance Rapadas, Burroughs Parent Teacher Association president and a former Burroughs student. "It's very sad." Board members reviewed the proposal from Superintendent Christopher Steinhauser on Tuesday and are expected to vote on the issue next month. (more…)
