Strapped San Diego Unified considers seeking donations

Three months ago, slightly more than half of San Diego voters backed a temporary parcel tax to help fill a multimillion-dollar hole in the San Diego Unified School District’s budget. But the measure needed a two-thirds majority to pass, and the tax, which would have brought in a projected $50 million annually for the next five years, failed. Now, district officials are eyeing the 50.8 percent who voted “yes” to chip in what they would have had to pay if Proposition J succeeded in November. Trustees moved Tuesday to look into the creation of a private nonprofit foundation for donations to the district. (more...)
