Governor signs version of 'Dream Act'

Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law on Monday a bill to allow undocumented immigrants who live in California to apply for scholarships funded with private donations. The bill is one of two "Dream Act" proposals in the state. The governor signed Assembly Bill 130, which only deals with non-state funds. The governor signed the bill during an appearance at Los Angeles City College. The more significant and controversial legislation, Assembly Bill 131, would make undocumented students eligible for state funded financial aid. That bill is currently before the state Senate. Brown has said he would sign that bill if it's approved by lawmakers. Congress debated last year a national version of the Dream Act, which would provide undocumented students access to federal financial aid.
