East Palo Alto school district to consider school closures, furloughs

The Ravenswood City School District plans to close two campuses, increase class sizes and furlough teachers next year, under a proposed budget trustees are set to review Thursday. The cost-saving measures are expected to help close a $3.2 million budget deficit the district is facing thanks to state funding losses, said Meghan Curtis, the district's chief business official. In years past, the district has had to cut a "little deeper and a little deeper," but managed to spare classrooms, she said. "There's not much else to cut and we have to now resort to making cuts in the classroom," Curtis said. Earlier this month, trustees authorized district staff to draft a 2011-12 budget with school mergers, bigger class sizes and teacher furloughs. (more…)
