Many local school districts fall short of state standards

With the school year winding down, educators will soon learn if their districts will receive the state's dreaded Program Improvement status. More than half of Inland Valley's school districts were in PI during the 2010-11 school year, according to the state Department of Education. Despite that, educators warn that entire school districts should not be judged on whether they slip into Program Improvement. "You'll see schools reaching 800, which is the state benchmark on the Academic Performance Index," said Christine McGrew, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. "They may have strong growth they'll be celebrating, yet the school or entire district will be falling into Program Improvement at the federal level." (more…)
