School board OKs rescinding of layoff notices

The Los Angeles Unified school board Tuesday approved rescinding more than 3,400 layoff notices for district educators and canceled more than 1,600 planned layoffs for cafeteria workers, bus drivers and class aides who agreed to take furloughs next year to prevent job cuts. Seven LAUSD employee unions have agreed to taking four furlough days next year, which will reduce the school year by three days while also helping to keep class sizes at most grade levels intact. Earlier this year, LAUSD officials approved a plan to close a projected budget deficit of $408 million for the 2011-12 school year that included class size increases at all grade levels except high school, slashed arts and music programs and virtually eliminated librarians and school nurses. But thousands of job cuts could still be needed at LAUSD. Even if all workers agree to concessions, more than 1,900 jobs would still have to be cut because of declining enrollment and the expiration of federal stimulus funding, district officials said.
