Taking a different path out of high school

A missionary. A soldier. A computer whiz. A performer. Those are the dreams of four high school seniors picking up diplomas at local schools this month. Their next stops after graduation are South Africa, the Israeli Defense Force, a local computer company and a stage. They aren't planning to head straight to college, and they're not alone. College enrollment has increased in recent years, yet many young adults still choose a different route. Only about 40 percent of high school graduates go directly to a four-year university, according to the latest figures from the National Center for Education Statistics. Steve Boyd, a counselor at Foothill Technology High School in Ventura, said he sees family finances playing a bigger role in students' decisions. (more...)
