Governor Brown working up pension reforms to win Republican budget support

There could be some movement soon in Governor Jerry Brown’s attempt to get a budget-balancing tax measure on the ballot. Most Republicans in Sacramento say they won’t put the measure before voters. But five GOP members are hinting they might let it move forward if they can get the governor and Democratic lawmakers to agree to pension reforms. On Friday, Brown said he’s drawing up a proposal for pension reform. In a letter this week, five Republican senators encouraged Brown to adopt pension reforms consistent with a proposal from the Little Hoover Commission. The state government’s watchdog panel is urging lawmakers to freeze the pensions of current public employees. The commission also went a step further and recommended switching those employees to lower-cost pension plans. (more...)
