Local option for state tax initiative

Last week’s elections should hearten those who are exploring a local option as part of a tax initiative in November 2012. Even in hard times, voters are willing to shell out more for their local schools. Of the seven parcel taxes on the ballot, five passed with the required two-thirds majority, and the two that lost, in Pacific Grove Unified and Las Virgenes Schools, did get more than 55 percent voter support. The ones that passed ranged from $59 per parcel in Mammoth Unified, an extension of the existing tax, to $374 per parcel in Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified, which replaced the $165 tax. It’s a small sample, but it’s been consistent. In May, nine of 13 parcel taxes passed, but all got more than 55 percent of the vote. For all of 2011, two-thirds of the 27 parcel taxes on the ballot passed, according to Mike McMahon, a school consultant who tracks ballot measures. (more...)
