California should seek 'No Child' waiver

President Obama announced the details last month of waivers from the federal No Child Left Behind Act, and Wednesday was the soft deadline for states to signal interest that they would apply. Thirty-seven states did so, and California was not one of them. California should take full advantage of this opportunity and apply for a waiver now. The president's announcement about the future of our education system was one that should matter to every parent. Congress passed the act to tackle the harsh reality that poor and minority students were invisible in our education system. I remain a proud author of that law but recognize that it has been 10 years since its passage. We can and must hold true to the law's tenets, but we must also update it to address current national needs and the laws' shortfalls. (more...)
