Oakland board votes to close 5 schools

A crowd of 500 parents, teachers and children yelled and jeered as the Oakland school board held a final hearing before voting 5-2 Wednesday night to close five elementary schools at the end of this school year. The vote came after several hours of discussion and public comment at Oakland Tech High School, where the meeting was held. A small police presence was on hand to help keep order. The meeting was frequently interrupted by bursts of emotion, anger and catcalls. Early on, the agitated crowd shouted down board President Jody London, who recessed the meeting for five minutes until calm was restored. (more...)
