Reprieve in works for S.D. Unified schools

The San Diego school board is poised to cancel plans to close campuses amid growing unrest from parents and teachers who oppose the initiative that’s been criticized as flawed and unnecessary. At a news conference Thursday, trustee Scott Barnett called on fellow board members to abandon the San Diego Unified School District’s recommendations to close or consolidate more than a dozen schools, save for a few instances that might give students better facilities and stronger academic programs. Board President Richard Barrera will present a formal proposal to trustees Tuesday to officially kill the sweeping school closure plan, which was conceived as a way to save money at a time when the district is under financial distress. The drastic reversal comes on the heels of a packed school board meeting Tuesday that drew hundreds of angry parents, teachers and students to rally against closures. (more...)
