Single-sex schools: Separate but equal?

A recent report in Science magazine raised questions about the legality of separating students by sex and the educational benefits of doing so. The article, “The Pseudoscience of Single Sex Schooling,” written by eight social scientists, found no empirical evidence suggesting that single-sex settings produce better academic results and concluded that the separation reinforces sex stereotypes. “Boys who spend more time with other boys become increasingly aggressive,” the article said. “Similarly, girls who spend more time with other girls become more sex-typed.” Should single-sex public school programs be legal?
