Two bitter education rivals begin to bury the hatchet

Two bitter rivals in the debate over how to improve schools did something unexpected today during an education conference in Washington: They conceded there's a lot they agree on. In a 30-minute impromptu interview with USA TODAY and Education Week, Teach For America founder Wendy Kopp and National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel seemed ready to bury the hatchet. The meeting of the minds today emerged as Secretary of Education Arne Duncan unveiled the Obama administration's new plan to reform the USA's teacher training system. NEA has been harshly critical of TFA over much of the program's 21-year history, complaining that TFA does little to encourage its bright, young teachers to stay in the classroom past a two-year commitment.
