Education gap and industry demand contribute to unemployment

In metropolitan areas across the country there is a mis-match between worker education and job opportunities that contributes to high unemployment along with other factors, according to a new analysis by the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program. The new report, “Education, Demand, and Unemployment in Metropolitan America,” released Friday, looks at how worker education and the composition of local economies affect unemployment. Nationally the average worker has 13.48 years of education compared to the 13.54 years demanded by average jobs available. San Diego’s workers are slightly over-educated with 13.82 years of education compared to 13.64 years demanded by the average jobs. (more...)
