Education Report: It's test score time

It's every education reporter's favorite time of year: the annual test score release! Want to see how your school did last school year? You can find a spreadsheet with multiple tabs posted on the blog. We also ran a big chart in Thursday's paper listing the API scores and No Child Left Behind status of all the schools in our area. For my story, I talked to two Oakland principals -- Marco Franco, of Sobrante Park, and Charles Wilson, of Fred T. Korematsu Discovery Academy -- about their experiences with No Child Left Behind. As the federal law is currently written, all students are supposed to reach proficiency in reading and math by 2014. Each year, schools are required to bring more students to proficiency in those subjects; as the bar gets higher, more schools are entering a status called Program Improvement (often called PI) under which they face a set of federal requirements. Franco was at Sobrante Park five years ago when the school made its goals and managed to get out of Program Improvement. Now it's is back in. (more...)
