Only half of high school grads feel prepared for college and work

Last week we reported on Americans' desire for parents to do more to get their children to succeed academically. About two-thirds of American adults polled said there isn't enough parental pressure on U.S. kids when it comes to school. Perhaps the kids agree, too. According to a survey conducted for the College Board (PDF), slightly less than half of high school graduates one year out of school say that their high school prepared them well for college and the working world. The situation looks better once the statistics related to college and to work life are parsed. 66 percent of students said their high school did a good job of preparing them for college-level studies, while 58 percent said they felt well-prepared for the working world upon graduation.
