Year of challenges for LAUSD

The beginning of school is one of the most promising times of the year, even
when the chances of further cuts still cast a pall on education in Los Angeles
and California. In the last 24 months, the Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD) has lost $2 billion and begins the school year with a staff reduction
of about 10,000 people, among them teachers, counselors and administrators. In
many schools, the school year has been cut, just like summer school and
extracurricular programs. Additionally this year, enrollment has fallen by 17
million students, which represents a significant revenue loss for the school
district. "Public schools in Los Angeles and California have been hit hard
by cuts in the last three years, and that means the students are receiving less
education than before," said John Rogers, director of UCLA's Institute for
Democracy, Education, and Access. (more...)
