LAUSD STUDENTS TO PRESENT RESEARCH AT LOS ANGELES CITY HALL: THE IMPACT OF THE ECONOMIC CRISIS ON YOUTH, THEIR FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES
Students are a part of the ‘Council of Youth Research,’ a partnership between UCLA IDEA and teachers, students, and administrators from Los Angeles high schools.
LOS ANGELES – The Council of Youth Research – twenty-five students from high schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) – will present findings from a summer research seminar with UCLA faculty members on Friday, Aug. 7. The Council is a partnership of UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (UCLA IDEA) and teachers, students, and administrators from Los Angeles high schools. This year, the students’ research examined the impact of the economic crisis on Los Angeles youth and how they are resisting and responding. They have created and distributed 1,000 surveys and have conducted interviews with hundreds of students, teachers, principals, leaders of community organizations, and officials, such as LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines. Their findings hold important lessons about the kinds of support youth and their families need to overcome the economic crisis.
Council of Youth Research students are from the following LAUSD high schools: Wilson, Roosevelt, Locke, Manual Arts, and Crenshaw.
“We are excited about this year’s presentations,” said Ernest Morrell, a professor at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. “The youth have chosen a timely topic and I believe that their research will shed light on the impact of the economic crisis on the experiences of L.A. youth. Even further, I also believe that our youth have important recommendations for students, parents, teachers, administrators, policymakers, and everyday citizens who are interested in change. They are a passionate group led by dedicated teachers, and their work is relevant and of the highest quality.”
This was the tenth summer that UCLA IDEA has held this research seminar with urban high school students. Morrell and fellow professor John Rogers taught the seminar.
