LAUSD STUDENTS TO PRESENT RESEARCH DETAILING EFFECT OF THE ECONOMIC CRISIS ON LOS ANGELES SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS
On March 12, 2010, students from high schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will present research focusing on the impact that the current economic crisis has had on young people in their schools and communities.
Beginning last summer, these students have been participating in a program called the Council of Youth Research, which is sponsored by the Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (IDEA) at UCLA. Students from Wilson, Roosevelt, Locke, Manual Arts, and Crenshaw high schools have spent months researching critical issues in society that matter to Los Angeles youth and sharing their findings with LAUSD officials, local politicians, and their school communities.
They have created and distributed hundreds of surveys and have conducted interviews with dozens of students, teachers, principals, leaders of community organizations, and officials. They will present their findings on the educational impact of the economic crisis using video and PowerPoint presentations and invite community members to respond.
The event will be held at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center at 675 S. Park View Street, LA, CA 90057. A reception with light refreshments will be held for all guests from 4:30pm to 5:30pm, and the student presentation will begin at 5:40pm.
The Council of Youth Research has been co-directed by UCLA Professors Ernest Morrell and John Rogers since 1999.
