UNEQUAL TO THE TASK: STUDY REVEALS ACHIEVEMENT GAPS, RESOURCE DISPARITIES IN STATE’S PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Although most California students face hurdles, obstacles are greatest for African American and Latino students
What: Tele-press conference to discuss the findings of the 2007 Educational Opportunity Report: The Racial Opportunity Gap study by UC ACCORD and UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (IDEA).
With evidence that white and Asian students in California are consistently outperforming their African American and Latino peers, California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell has called for a statewide focus on understanding and eliminating this gap.
Responding to O’Connell’s call, the 2007 Educational Opportunity Reports examine California’s poor and unequal education achievement in light disparate conditions in public schools. The reports focus primarily on two “opportunity gaps”: the gap between California and other states and the gap among California public schools. The study reports statewide trends, regional analyses, and statistics about each of the state’s middle and high schools. Supplemental reports examine the unique experiences of California’sLatino and African American students
