Teaching to Change LA

— filed under:

An online journal that addressed educational conditions in Los Angeles schools.

Teaching to Change LA (TCLA) was an online journal that addressed educational conditions in Los Angeles schools. K-12 students, parents, teachers, guest contributors, and researchers provided the content for the journal, published by UCLA IDEA several times a year.  Journal readers included those who learn and teach in Los Angeles schools, local and state policymakers and legislators, and readers from across the country. TCLA has had more than 1 million visitors since its founding in December 2000. Readers can still access TCLA’s archives at:

TCLA created a unique environment from which urban students, parents, and teachers could be heard beyond their local classrooms. Our contributors used computer generated maps, photographs, graphs, video, and audio to communicate the complex ideas, stories, and other data that are relevant to their own communities and schools.

TCLA-affiliated classrooms became vibrant intellectual sites that contributed directly and connected virtually to civic life. Participating parents gained tools for examining the conditions in their children's schools. Readers shared in a vibrant public debate about what conditions for learning every student deserves and how these conditions can be insured.
