The U.S. Department of Education has awarded half-million dollar planning grants to two Los Angeles nonprofits and to California State University, East Bay in Hayward to replicate a much publicized effort to improve the lives and school achievement of children in Harlem. President Obama’s $10 million Promise Neighborhood grants went to 21 groups out of 300 that applied nationwide. The three California grantees will be eligible for $10 million to $20 million each next year to implement their plans, assuming Congress approves Obama’s $210 million budget request. (more…)
