A matter of time before exit exam’s exit

Nearly 19 out of 20 of seniors in the Class of 2010 who had to take the California High School Exit Exam passed it. That’s great news, in a narrow sense. But just as record numbers of African-American and Hispanic students are finally passing it, the high school exam itself may be doomed. The awarding on Thursday of $170 million to a consortium of states that includes California to create new national assessments signals its demise. That’s also good news. California is one of 26 states that are part of Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, one of two groups that the federal government is funding to design standardized tests in line with the common-core standards in math and English that California adopted last month. The focus will now shift to, as PARCC’s name implies, measuring whether students are career and college ready. The state’s exit exam – CAHSEE — has never come close to gauging that. (more…)
