Able and very willing to sign Edujobs bill

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ended a week of speculation and jitters for school districts by formally requesting two bills that will provide quick billions for schools. Then he took off to Asia, leaving Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado as acting governor to make a big deal over signing them into law this morning at a Los Angeles charter school. Among their last acts before splitting town on Sept. 1, the Legislature passed emergency legislation authorizing the expenditure of $1.2 billion in federal “Edujobs” money to rehire laid off school employees (SB 847, sponsored by Sen. President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg) and $416 in School Improvement Grant money for 92 low-performing schools to turn themselves around (AB 185, sponsored by Assemblymember Joan Buchanan, which also authorizes the final portion of last year’s stimulus bill).
