Administrator defends district fees for transportation, testing

Fees charged by Temecula schools for transportation to sporting events and to take Advanced Placement exams have led the American Civil Liberties Union to name the school district in a lawsuit filed last week. The ACLU sued the state and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for allowing Temecula Valley Unified and 39 other school districts to charge fees for books and other educational supplies. According to the organization, the practice violates the California Constitution, which guarantees children a free education. Although referenced by the ACLU, the individual school districts are not being sued. Jeff Okun, assistant superintendent for business for the Temecula Valley Unified School District, said the fees it collects are legal under a 1997 state Department of Education ruling. (more…)
