Calif. votes to reject Texas textbook changes

California lawmakers are seeking to prevent a revised social studies curriculum approved in Texas from being taught in the nation's largest public school system. The state Senate on Tuesday voted 21-13 to send SB1451 to the governor. It requires the California Board of Education to look out for any of the Texas content as part of its standard practice of reviewing public school textbooks. The Texas school board adopted standards in May asserting that the country's Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles. They also minimize Thomas Jefferson's role in world and U.S. history and highlight the "unintended consequences" of affirmative action. Critics say the changes are historically inaccurate and dismiss the contributions of minorities. (more…)
