California schools to receive federal boost

School districts throughout California soon will receive an influx of money from the federal government to rehire laid-off teachers, hire new employees or add days to the school calendar that had been cut to balance the budget. On Wednesday, the state Legislature passed a bill that would allow the state to disburse the funds. Once Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signs it, the money should be in the school districts' hands within a few weeks, said Tina Jung of the California Department of Education. Oakland Unified is expected to receive the highest amount in the East Bay, about $7.12 million, followed by Mt. Diablo Unified in Contra Costa County ($6.45 million) and Fremont Unified in Alameda County ($6.04 million). (more…)
