California's 'English learner' students are learning faster

When Halow Hung started kindergarten at Irene B. West Elementary in Elk Grove a few years ago, he spoke little English and felt more comfortable talking in his native Vietnamese. Today, he speaks English well, boldly raising his hand several times during a class lesson about animals this week and throwing out words like "rhinoceros." Several new sets of data suggest that "English learners" like Hung are picking up the language faster. (more…)
