Interim superintendent of L.A. County education office appointed

The deputy superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education has been appointed to serve as interim chief of the agency by the Board of Supervisors. The supervisors voted unanimously in closed session Tuesday to appoint Jon R. Gundry to the post after the Monday retirement of Darline P. Robles, who had overseen the office since 2002. Robles stepped down amid a number of controversies, including a recent decision -- heavily criticized by  the supervisors -- to close two dozen alternative schools. But she was also praised for several initiatives, including a reorganization of the agency’s Head Start preschool program. The county education office, based in Downey, controls a budget of nearly $1 billion, offers support programs for 80 K-12 school districts and provides classroom instruction for 8,000 special education students and an estimated 30,000 juvenile offenders.
