Jobs bill tardy for schools: Many districts expect to use funds next year

A federal jobs bill approved last month was supposed to create jobs by giving millions to local school districts to rehire laid-off teachers, but many districts have already brought teachers back and say the federal leftovers likely won't be used until next year. Across San Bernardino County, school districts - even ones that didn't lay off teachers last year - are set to receive more than $111 million in federal funds aimed at saving teachers' jobs, according to estimates from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Office. Most district officials say they have no plans to use the money in the short term and might hold on until the 2011-12 school year. (more…)
