S.D. teacher layoffs possible this time

San Diego city teachers may face layoffs for the first time since the district began its annual process of slashing millions of dollars from its budget four years ago. San Diego Unified School District officials said Tuesday that the district’s teaching staff could shrink by 1,000 positions next year and another 500 non-teaching jobs, including library and nursing positions, could be eliminated to compensate for a projected $141 million deficit. The district has largely avoided cuts at the classroom level until now, with staff reductions and eliminations of unfilled positions occurring mostly at its central office.
