State launches site for teachers to collaborate

At a time when most school districts have all but cut out outside training and professional development days, the State Department of Education has created an online forum for teachers eager to meet colleagues, find lesson plans aligned to state standards, and exchange tips and advice. The Department officially launched Brokers of Expertise last week after several years and $3.4 million of development. Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell and others are calling it a “Facebook for teachers,” but that’s presumptuous for a site that has yet to attract more than hundreds of viewers and a handful of users. But, with lots of content already uploaded and linked and some of the latest social media tools, it does have the potential to become a hot site for California teachers and eventually, with the adoption of common-core standards, for colleagues nationwide.
