Teachers spend own cash for class supplies

Teachers again dug into their own pockets this year, paying hundreds of dollars on average for classroom supplies. According to a recent study by the National School Supply and Equipment Association, U.S. public school teachers on average spent $356 of their own money on supplies for their classrooms in 2009-10. More than half of those surveyed said school supply budgets were down because of the economy, and to make up the shortfall in their own classrooms, teachers bought supplies, changed lesson plans and asked for more from parents, according to the association. About 92 percent of teachers in the national survey said they spent their own money on school supplies. (more…)
