Textbooks valued at $465,500 rescued from Salinas landfill, recycled

Thousands of new public school textbooks destined for the trash heap have been rescued and redirected to elementary classrooms in Salinas and Mexico, officials said Wednesday. A total of 26 pallets of English reading books — 13,300 in all — valued at $465,500 had been sitting at a local landfill since August. The books were being discarded by the Alisal Union School District after officials approved a new language arts book for districtwide use. What Alisal officials didn’t know is that the Houghton Mifflin reading books they planned to get rid of were the same materials the Salinas City Elementary School District had on back order for use at its schools.
